Read and Write is a software toolbar that helps users complete tasks by reading text aloud, proofreading text, and supporting writing. It is free for students, faculty, and staff!

  • The text-to-speech feature highlights text as it reads it out loud.
  • Users can speak and the toolbar will translate the audio into text. The tool can also go the opposite direction, convert written text into an audio file for users.
  • It provides definitions and visuals for words that are difficult to understand. Users can generate vocabulary lists with the ability to add personal notes.
  • It also includes an embedded grammar checker.

Email your local IT to gain access to the tool. They can push the software to your University-issued computer.

You can also install the software yourself and use your PSU Google ID as your account.  Here are the directions:

Install the Software

  1. Go to Text Help: Read and Write software site.
  2. Select Try Read and Write to download the software.   Select your operating system.
  3. Open or execute the file from the download location.
  4. Click on Accept and Install.  Allow the installation to be completed.  You may need admin privileges.
  5. Open the software.
  6. Select “Sign-in with Google” and enter your PSU User ID and password.

How To Resources

IT would be your best resource for installing the software, but please contact Jen Wagner (jlw83@psu.edu) or IT Accessibility (accessibility@psu.edu) if you have any questions about the functions of the software.
